At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
